Part of the problem is that there are no other synptoms than the warning light coming on - no limp home mode, no noticable reduced performance, still smooth power delivery, no increase in fuel consumption.

Just bloody emissions issue (?), and the car happily passed a MOT with the light on!

i think the DSC light may have had something to do with a small accident I had recently (I hit a concrete block on the motorway that had fallen from a lorry - at around 80) which led to a replacement front wheel, lower wishbone and other suspension/steering parts.

I asked for a print off of the error codes, but they only gave me the one that stayed after they reset - so only one code and that related to the steering wheel sensor issue.

Other problem is that it is all in Dutch (I am living in Eindhoven at the moment). The car has never gone into limp home mode, the lights don't seem to indicate anything that affects performance.

If the light comes on again I will then buy a reader. I don't suppose they do a reset device as well?
      sounds like steering angle sensor

might end up being the cat itself, or the o2 sensors? (clean?)

I think you are on the right track indy, but the issue comes and goes (as earlier).

Could the sensors "clean" themselves so the problem temporily goes away - feels unlikely?

I've now joined the 'engine light' club. Came on last night for the first time. No apparent ill effects other than the irritating glow from that engine outline on the dash !

Anyone ever reached any further conclusions as to what this really represents other than the manual reference to emissions?

Regret no - I have had this issue for years - it's the only thing about the car that is b...........annoying!

Bought an OBD2 code reader/reset tool - plugged it in, deleted 4 error codes and the MIL light has gone off - excellent.

I don't think we should be too concerned about this, as it's (only) there because of an USA emissions requirement.

As mentioned previously, the car passed a MOT with the light on and runs perfectly with it on.

Which tool did you buy (from where?) There seems to be a choice of under bonnet or interior tools?

                      Purchased a CAS 804 from KEE Automotive (www.automotiveclassics.com) £35.94 inc vat plus £5.99 p&p.

It was ordered on Saturday and arrived Tuesday so good delivery.

The OBD2 socket is just above the pedals with a cover that clips down - dead easy.

Thanks for the info and I don't want to upset you but for anyone else I've just ordered the same reader at www.exprodirect.com for £19.97 delivery included. Of course it's got to turn up yet . . . .

                            Have moved forward with this.

Dash warning light came on again yesterday. OBD check showing error code P0430. This is "catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 2)".

Logically this seems to indicate that a cat is stuffed or a sensor is giving an incorrect reading.

Not aware of what the "threshold" is or how far away from it the car is. Do know the car passed the MOT emissions test with the warning light on without any difficulty and runs fine.

Therefore assume it is outside USA standard but within UK standard.

Conclusion: clear error code when it comes on every few weeks - now a one minute job!

The limit that the ECU is expecting to see will be above that that is required for MOT.

As you say, could be CAT, sensor, wiring, ECU or anything else that may have an effect on what the ECU is seeing or thinks it's seeing - nothing is simple in the world of diagnostics!!

I would suggest its a Lambda sensor bunged up Ian..

Does this tool you have bought have any kind of live data reading ? If so you will be able to see if the Lambda sensors are sticking or switching freely..

The problem is,that leaving it can cause lot more expensive problems..

Too rich and you can stuff your cats...

Too lean and cylinder temps skyrocket and you can burn out valves and damage pistons...

Why not try some some of this.... http://www.forteuk.co.uk/product.php..._Gas_Treatment

We use it and it can clean up a slow reacting lambda and drop emissions..
