some of this is general and I am rambling a bit but based on my experience If I were going to see an S50 car I would be looking out for the following things.

        General Condition.

Do all of the panels line up? does the paintwork look original? has there been any welds under the bonnet or at the rear in the boot area.

check the leather for wear bearing in mind the mileage, likewise steering wheel, pedals, boot carpet.

        Wheels for kerbing.

Tyres for even wear and the makes of tyres to ensure the owner has not begrudginly maintained the car.

Check the boot under the carpet and battery cover for rips/tears in the bodywork!

If you are happy with the condition of the car this is part of your battle won.

        Engine

It will be good if you can drive the car as the VANOS might be slightly noisey but you may still have all of the power present in which case operation is normal.

start up the engine and listen. How loud is the VANOS? some noise(slight growl at the front of the engine) is common on the S50 but it should not sound like a bag of spanners! ( £1500 ex vat plus labour)

Does the car sound different cold to hot, you may be able to hear the VANOS more when the engine is hot and the oil is thinner.

Can you hear the Flywheel? if faulty then you will hear it rattle continuously on idle and the noise will quieten on pressing the clutch in (£600 ex vat plus labour)

Clutch - does it slip while driving?

Performance - how does she pull? can you feel the power surge from around 5k?

Brakes - what are the disks like? are they worn? is there a lip around the edge? any cracking?
How does she stop, hopefully well and in a straight line.

steering - there should be no noise on steering like with some cars. The power steering on the S50 is very quiet.

Air con - does it work? a lot of people get caught out on this but if not in warranty you could be seeing a bill for over a grand! air con when working will be very cold.

        Check the electric seat/windows/mirrors/sunroof functions.

        check all lights.

Obviously you should make sure all inspections have been done on time, do not be too afraid of specialist servicing! I would not personally go back to main dealer servicing!

ask to see reciepts for the car, you need to make sure you do not spend £££££ buying the car and then have to spending more as soon as you pick her up.

I may have missed something but its a good place to start!
