  • Leaking Diff. Seals

    Hi Guys,

Do diff seals leak even when they are OK. I have been told by BMW that they are leaking. The guys who's car it is said they always leak and even if they were replaced, they will still leak.

Any wisdom from you guys will be more than welcome.

    Thanks

is that what I said in my voicemail?

My view - everyone feel free to contribute!! I'm not bothered by the truth! - is that when the car had it's inspection 2, the guy who serviced it (local specialist) said there was some weeping from the seals, but that was to be expected over time. He cleaned them up so that I could have a look at it after a while to see if it was bad. About a year later I had a good look whilst it was up on ramps and there was a little leakage, but nothing significant. So I guess the check has picked up on that.

So I'm under the impression that a bit of leakage is usual, but until I see the car (friday) I won't know if this is as it was before, or something new.

As I said, speak up guys - I know one or two who won't be backwards about coming forwards

No the rear diff should not leak or weap in the slightest, the seals overtime will perish like any item made of rubber.

I had to have mine replaced at about 60k, now it's bone dry

When I changed the diff in my car i thought both the output flange seals were ok.

About 100 miles later i noticed that one was weaping slightly. The cost for the seals is about £5 each and they can be replaced with the diff in place with just the drive shafts needing removing at the diff end.
