Sills and jacking points are a bit of a dirt trap on zeds. When you get chance would be worth getting the covers off and doing a full tidy up. Nice guide here https://zroadster.org/articles/bmw-z...protection.67/

Thats the plan now, I've ordered some Por-15 and internal wax, and have my welder mate on standby. New Drill and Wire wheel at the ready.
I watched a good video from Redish last night that showed me all I needed to know, but I fear mines going to be a mess behind there lol.
Cheers

Sunday is not so Fun Day
Ain't that the truth...
As I dig into it...
Wing Panel off.
Rust found behind it, not a happy camper, as not noticed this on first inspections.
It will have to do for now, as no budget for the wing, or the other jobs to be fair lol.
The sill cover is a mess when I got into it, I knew it was looking a bit rough from my exploits under the car looking at the jacking point, but alas it's gone both ends and not worth saving.
One ordered from BMW today.
Then found the worst issue behind the O/S wheel arch...
The rest of the panel just has some surface rust that will be wire wheeled off, Rust treated, Por-15 coated and undersealed when the weather is better, and my replacement wire wheelset turns up from eBay.
Trying to get some life out of the wing...Again Rust Treated and Por15, its amess, but they are over £200 plus paint, just don't have the budget this month, or next TBF.
Roll on the weekend. Though I was not expecting to get this deep into it 3 weeks into ownership.
Old cars hey!2001 E46 M3 Coupe for me / 2007 E91 335i for the Dogs.

I think it would be rare not to have some corrosion at those points on the front wings, even if it's not visible on the outside. There are pattern parts around but they are naturally not as good as OE panels. I've not idea why the OE panels are so expensive for a small part, it's practically the same panel on every Z3 variant ever made.

Vanos Tuesday.
Though looking in doubt as it was starting to rain, wet underfoot, and driving winds, Steve from Mr Vanos came, he replaced and he went.
Very happy with the service, very professional, and did a good job, and I now have a nice clean, quiet and working Vanos.
Old and leaking.
New and happy.
The car is now running a dream and had some values shims sorted and anew rocker cover at the same time as part of the service, so happy days.2001 E46 M3 Coupe for me / 2007 E91 335i for the Dogs.

I can see for close inspection, its been painted over the rust, as I can see the sanding marks around the rusted area now through the paint when looking under a bright light, so needs sorting.

£895 all in with vat and call out etc.
It’s a fully rebuilt unit, with all the seals, solenoids and pistons replaced. This is fitted with modified cam gear plates and once fitted they expect it to last the life of the car.
They also check the valve clearances as the cams have to come out to change the gears. New valve cover gaskets are also fitted.
They give 3 years warranty on the unit and a lifetime warranty against any Vanos noise.
So happy days.2001 E46 M3 Coupe for me / 2007 E91 335i for the Dogs.
